WHAT TO KNOW
The world is on track to invest a record $2.2 trillion in clean energy technology this year, more than double the amount invested in fossil fuels and more than four times the amount invested in renewables a decade ago. Solar investments are expected to reach $450 billion globally in 2025, outpacing the investment for any other energy source.
WHY IT MATTERS
The ongoing transition from fossil fuels to renewables represents the fastest energy transformation in human history, outpacing every previous large-scale shift on record. While the transitions from muscle energy to wood-burning to coal and finally oil each took decades or even longer to see through, experts say the broad global shift to renewables is happening much faster.
CONNECT THE DOTS
As the world moves ahead with the clean transition, the Trump administration remains fixated on archaic energy tech, announcing new plans to open 13.1 million acres of public land to coal mining while offering $625 million to help re-open or retrofit coal-fired power plants. Coal use has been on a rapid decline since 2000 as research continually demonstrates its links to adverse health and environmental impacts.
