WHAT TO KNOW
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners made movie history this week, earning 16 Oscar nominations to become the most-nominated movie of all time. Coogler’s horror fantasy set in the 1930s surpassed the previous record of 14 nominations held by three films: All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2016). The record for the most wins is also shared by three films: Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), each of which took home 11 awards. The 98th Academy Awards will be held on March 15 and air on ABC.
WHY IT MATTERS
Coogler is the second Black filmmaker to be nominated in the same year for producing, directing, and original screenplay, following Jordan Peele’s three nods for his 2017 film Get Out. Sinners is also the seventh film to be nominated in every technical category in which it was competing, which is itself a remarkable accomplishment since every branch of the Academy votes on its own nominees (each branch votes together for best picture). The feat suggests the film has strong support across every group of Oscar voters.
CONNECT THE DOTS
Emma Stone also made Oscar history this week, earning two nominations for her work on Bugonia: Best Picture (as a producer) and Best Actress. At 37, Stone is the second-youngest person and youngest woman to earn seven career nominations (Walt Disney earned his seventh at age 34). Stone is also the first woman to be nominated twice for producing and acting in a single film (she received dual-nods for 2023’s Poor Things).
