WHAT TO KNOW
  • Nepal plans to limit permits to climb Mount Everest to mountaineers with experience scaling at least one of the Himalayan nation’s other 7,000-meter (23,000 ft) peaks. Of the 400 mountain peaks in Nepal that are open to tourist expeditions, 74 are higher than 7,000 meters (though not many are popular with climbers).

WHY IT MATTERS
  • The new rule proposed by Nepali lawmakers is designed to address overcrowding and ecological damage on the world’s tallest mountain, and marks a major shift for the country, which remains heavily reliant on climbing, trekking, and tourism for foreign exchange (expeditions to Everest contribute around $300 million annually to its economy). Earlier this year, Nepal increased the cost of a permit to climb Everest to $15,000, up from the $11,000 fee that had been in place for nearly a decade prior.

CONNECT THE DOTS
  • Nepal has faced criticism in recent years for allowing too many people, including inexperienced climbers, to attempt the 8,849-meter (29,032 feet) summit. Eight people died on Everest in 2024, when Nepal issued 421 climbing permits, while at least 12 died in 2023, when the country issued a record 478 permits. Nepal has issued at least 427 permits so far in the 2025 spring season.
