🌅 Italy’s Wolf-Dog Hybrids Pose a Serious Threat

WHAT TO KNOW

• A new study by researchers in Italy suggests nearly half (47%) of the country’s wild wolves are actually wolf-dog hybrids (WDH), underscoring just how close wolves and domestic dogs have become since the country’s first WDH was discovered in the 1970s. The researchers also found that while some of the animals are descendants of hybridization events that took place generations ago, many are the result of more recent cross-breeding, suggesting hybridization is ongoing.

WHY IT MATTERS

• Italy is home to approximately 3,300 of Europe’s 21,000 wild wolves, and the authors say the fact that so many are actually hybrids poses a serious threat to the future of the country’s wolf population. The wolves are at risk of reaching a point experts call “genetic swamping,” in which the original gene pool of wild wolves becomes irreversibly replaced by that of the hybrids. Put simply, it means the wolf—genetically speaking—could cease to exist.

• Dogs are the world’s earliest domesticated species, however, it isn’t clear whether humans domesticated the animals or whether they domesticated themselves through a process called “self-domestication.” Research suggests the domestication of wolves began sometime around 15,000 to 30,000 years ago and that all modern dogs may have descended from just one or two common wolf populations that appeared sometime after. Evidence also suggests that wolves could have been drawn to early human campsites by the smell of cooked meat and access to discarded scraps, and might have helped guard areas from predators. As tamer breeds of wolves became more tolerated by humans, it’s possible they helped humans hunt large prey, kicking off a symbiotic relationship that persists today.
