WHAT TO KNOW
  • A new survey from nonprofit National Collaborative for Health Equity found 76% of Americans believe we can work through our present challenges to find common ground, underscoring a shared optimism and hope about the future that politicians, soon-to-be-trillionaires, and media figures consistently ignore. Even more hopeful, an overwhelming 87% of Americans express the desire to feel that they belong, are connected to, and can trust one another, while a remarkable 90% agree that we need to find new ways to foster respectful dialogue and empathy.

WHY IT MATTERS
  • Americans express a strong, consistent unity across a broad range of issues, including immigration (82% believe it’s an integral part of American history and culture), diversity (78% acknowledge the importance of promoting it the workplace), and education (83% believe it’s critical to teach children about the history of race and racism). The unity is punctuated by a powerful sense of national pride, with 72% of Americans expressing pride in our shared nationality.

CONNECT THE DOTS
  • Despite the above findings, 81% of Americans believe the nation remains deeply divided. Experts say what that tells us is that the true divide isn’t actually between left and right, it’s between the false narrative of polarization permeating politics and media today against the reality that broad consensus exists on several key political and social issues.
