WHAT TO KNOW
In 2023, researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of USC published a study suggesting zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) adoption was linked to a decrease in air pollution. In January, the same team confirmed their earlier work in a new study, finding that for every 200 ZEVs added to California neighborhoods from 2019 to 2023, nitrogen dioxide levels dropped by 1.1%. The study is among the first to confirm the environmental health benefits of ZEVs, which include both fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars.
WHY IT MATTERS
Nitrogen dioxide is an air pollutant thatโs released by burning fossil fuels. Exposure to nitrogen dioxide can irritate lungs and impair the respiratory system, including by triggering asthma attacks and causing bronchitis. It can also increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, and greater levels are linked to an increased likelihood of emergency department visits and hospital admissions.
CONNECT THE DOTS
A new analysis by energy think tank Ember found all of last yearโs growth in global electricity demand was met by renewable sources, while power generated from fossil fuels remained flat, marking what could be a turning point in the global push to phase out fossil fuels. Ember also found solar had another record year, meeting 75% of the global electricity demand growth. Over the past decade, solar generation has grown more than tenfold, doubling roughly every three years.
