WHAT TO KNOW
  • A new survey by Gallup found a record-high 79% of U.S. adults say immigration is good for the country, up from 64% in 2024. At the same time, the share who say they want to see immigration reduced has dropped from 55% in 2024 to 30% today, only 2 points above the record-low 28% measured in 2020.

WHY IT MATTERS
  • The uptick in Americans’ support for immigration stems largely from a sharp increase in support among Republicans, of which 64% now say immigration is a good thing for the country, a massive 25-point swing from the record-low 39% measured in 2024. Nonetheless, while 62% of U.S. adults disapprove of the way Trump is handling immigration, 85% of Republicans say they approve the president’s approach.

CONNECT THE DOTS
  • A new working paper from conservative think tank American Enterprise Institute found the U.S. will likely experience negative net migration (i.e., more people leaving the country than entering) this year for the first time in nearly seven decades. Reducing immigrants’ $299 billion in spending power and $167 billion in paid rent could shrink U.S. gross domestic product by between 0.3% and 0.4% this year. Put differently, the economic tradeoff of Trump’s mass deportations could be $70.5 billion to $94 billion in lost economic output.
