WHAT TO KNOW
Three-quarters of U.S. scientists who responded to Nature’s recent survey said they’re considering leaving the country after the Trump administration slashed research funding and stopped broad swaths of federally funded science. Europe and Canada were the top choices among those considering leaving, while some respondents who moved to the U.S. for work planned to move back to their country of origin..
WHY IT MATTERS
Tens of thousands of federal employees, including scientists, have been fired and rehired in recent weeks under Elon Musk’s “cost-cutting” DOGE initiative, with more mass firings apparently to come. The Trump administration’s views on immigration and academic independence have also left researchers unsure about the future of science in the U.S., while faculty who lead and support research labs may have no choice but to move their work abroad.
CONNECT THE DOTS
The U.S. became the world’s science leader not only by spending more than any other country, but also by attracting global scientific talent. The U.S. has won more Nobel Prizes in science than any other country by far, a third of which have been won by immigrant scientists. That proportion has increased in recent years, though the potential brain drain obviously threatens that progress.
