WHAT TO KNOW
Tickets to watch WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever take on the Brazilian national team on Sunday, May 4 were going for $670 ahead of game time, up from $440 last week. The sold-out game was played at the University of Iowa’s 15,500-seat Carver-Hawkeye Arena, where Clark spent four years playing before turning pro, eventually becoming the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer among both men and women.
WHY IT MATTERS
The $670 price tag is the highest ticket price on record for any WNBA game going back to 2015, according to data from VividSeats. Tickets sold out in 37 minutes when they went on sale to the public earlier this year.
CONNECT THE DOTS
Record-setting ticket prices could be a common theme at WNBA games this season: the league set new highs in both television viewership and live game attendance last year. Advertising spending during WNBA games also surged 139% last season, while merchandise sales on WNBAStore.com and at the store’s flagship location in New York City increased by a combined 601%.
