WHAT TO KNOW
  • The share of high school girls identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or questioning (LGBQ) jumped from 15% in 2015 to 34% in 2021 (the study data didn’t include information about transgender students). Over the same period, the share of high school girls who reported thinking about suicide rose from 23% to 29%, while the share who created a plan rose from 19% to 23%.

WHY IT MATTERS
  • In 2021, 48% of LGBQ high school girls reported considering suicide, compared with 20% of heterosexual girls. The authors found the increase in suicidal thoughts and behaviors was directly correlated with more students identifying as LGBQ, calling for additional support for students from schools and policymakers to address the trend.

CONNECT THE DOTS
  • Shortly after taking office, President Trump signed an executive order attempting to restrict federal funding for schools that promote “gender ideology or discriminatory equity ideology,” while lawmakers in at least 40 states are currently considering bills that reduce support or resources for LGBTQ+ students. A study by The Trevor Project last year found suicide attempts among transgender and non-binary students ages 13 to 17 rose by up to 72% in the years after their state passed at least one anti-transgender law.
