WHAT TO KNOW
The dramatic drop in breast cancer mortality has averted an estimated 518,000 deaths over the past three decades, largely due to advances in early detection methods and improved treatment options.
WHY IT MATTERS
The decline is all the more welcome as breast cancer incidence among women rose 1% a year from 2012 to 2021, including a steeper increase among women under 50 (1.4% a year) than women over 50 (0.7%).
CONNECT THE DOTS
The progress has been significant, but it hasn't benefited all groups equally: American Indian and Alaska Native women's mortality rates have remained unchanged over the past three decades, while Black women are still 38% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women, despite being 5% less likely to be diagnosed with the disease.
